Action Comics # 1
Released in June 1938 Action Comics # 1 features the very first appearance of Superman, created by duo Jerry Siegel and Joel Shuster this is the only comic book to date where a copy has sold for over $2 million.
Detective Comics # 27
With a price guide value of $4.23 million if one could be found in Near Mint condition ( 9.4 ), Detective Comics # 27 the first appearance of Batman is hot on the heels of Action Comics # 1 in the race to be the worlds most valuable comic book, the record price paid so far a " tec 27 " is just over one million dollars for a copy in 8.0 condition.
Amazing Fantasy # 15
Tried out in a comic book that was about to be discontinued the staff at Marvel were amazed when they saw the sales figures for their new character Spider-mans first show in Amazing Fantasy # 15 August 1962. A near mint copy of this issue recently sold for a million dollars making it the only comic from the silver age of comics ( 1956 - 1969 ) to reach this value.
Superman # 1
Superman gets his own comic book the year after the release of Action Comics #1. Seemingly cashing in on the popularity of their new superhero, DC then known as National Publications released this book which was basically just a reprint of the Superman stories found in Action Comics # 1 plus a couple of extra pages. Has been sold for as much as $750.000.
Batman # 1
Unlike Superman # 1 when Batman got his own book it was filled with original material. Batman #1 features the debuts of three characters still central to many Batman stories today, The Joker, Hugo Strange and Catwoman ( then known as the Cat. ). This book has achieved a price of $315,000.
Marvel Comics # 1
Three well known Marvel characters were introduced in this issue, The Human Torch ( although this is not the same human torch from the Fantastic Four, this one was an android ), the Sub Mariner makes only his second appearance and Ka-Zar the character not too dissimilar to Tarzan also makes his debut. A near mint copy of this book would probably fetch around a quarter of a million dollars!
All American Comics # 16
The first appearance of the original Green Lantern, Alan Scott, has an estimated value of around $72,000.
Incredible Hulk # 181
The inclusion of this issue in this list of a comic that was on published in 1974 might surprise a few however this book ( a 9.9 copy ) has been sold for the incredible sum of $150,000 the only Bronze Age comic to reach over $100,000. Of course this issue features the debut of a rather popular character known as Wolverine.
Whiz Comics # 2
Labelled by some as #1 because there was never a # 1 printed of this comic ( confused? so am i ) this book launches the career of Captain Marvel a character that was probably more popular than Superman in his day. The debut of the character who is now known as Shazam as fetched as much as $281,000 at auction for a high grade copy.
Captain America Comics # 1
One of the most long lasting and beloved characters in comic books, the super soldier Steve Rogers makes his debut by punching Adolf Hitler on the nose on the front cover of this iconic book. Has sold for as much as $343,000 !
More Fun Comics # 52
Although not a so well known character today the first appearance of the Spectre can fetch massive money, this issue has been known to reach as much as $316,000.
Flash Comics # 1
Would love to own a copy of this, not just because i am a big fan of the Flash but in near mint condition it would be worth around $500,000!
Detective Comics # 1
The book that would eventually become the traditional home of Batman, was originally an anthology comic that featured generic detective stories, this number one issue features a cover showing a character not to dissimilar to Fu Man Chu.
Detective Comics # 38
Still going strong today as Nightwing the character of Dick Grayson makes his debut here as Robin The Boy Wonder from April 1939.
Adventure Comics # 40
Like the Spectre the Golden Age Sandman is rarely seen today however this first appearance from July 1939 can command some serious money.
All Star Comics # 8
Wonder Woman makes her debut at the very back of this issue, it would be interesting to see how much this issue would fetch if a real high grade copy could be found.
Fantastic Four # 1
The book that really started Marvel on the road to being the top comic book publisher of the sixties featuring characters that are still popular today over 50 years later.
Showcase # 4
The book that was responsible for bringing back the superhero and starting what we now know as the Silver Age of comics. A new Flash, Barry Allen seen for the first time in October 1956. This book is certainly the most valuable of all DC books from the Silver Age ( 1956 - 1969 ).
